Apartments, Restaurant and Bar, Bishop Auckland

CLIENT ALKA DEVELOPMENTS | LOCATION BISHOP AUCKLAND | BRIEF LUXURY APRTMENTS & HOSPITALITY | BUDGET £800k

THE PROJECT

A mixed-use scheme in Bishop Auckland, County Durham to design five luxury short term let apartments and a restaurant and bar in the historical core of the town.

The first and second floors will be converted into five high end short-term let apartments targeted at visitors to Bishop Auckland. The low-level roof extension utilises oxide red cladding reflecting the tones of the adjacent historical brickwork. This is complemented by blonde brickwork for the post war elements of the site, to bring the historical gable to the foreground and accord with the adjacent rubble wall. Our design subtly identifies the contemporary elements, establishing a coherent building design in which the historical narrative can clearly be understood.

INTERIORS

We are working with award winning restauranteur Djam Kitchen to design the interior of the ground floor restaurant and bar, to create a warm minimalist aesthetic reflecting their culinary style.

DESIGN STRATEGY

The existing building is an amalgamation of several buildings joined over the last two centuries. Our strategy is to retain and enhance the historical features, whilst demolishing and adapting low quality post-war elements.

COMMUNITY INTEGRATION

Early concept sketches for the scheme demonstrate how the design integrates with the forthcoming Kingsway Square Development that we are also designing for The Auckland Project.

The development will see the creation of a public square and car park adjacent to the site. The exposed side elevation will be adapted to provide a connection between the hospitality space and proposed public square, promoting a vibrant hospitality and retail area, encouraging town centre rejuvenation.
